The following text was part of a display at her memorial constructed by her son Malcolm:
Barbara was diagnosed with breast cancer in the summer of 2001. She joined the Breast Friends dragon boat team three years later. The spirit she showed during her time with the team was emblematic of how she continued with her life during her illness: paddling with these women was an expression of joy, strength, and mutual support, visible to anyone who saw them on the water together.
Barbara's continued joie de vivre was visible in many other aspects of her life. She rode her bike to appointments at the Cross Cancer Institute. She continued to travel, advocate, and work. She enjoyed her garden and spent time with friends.
In short, she continued to lead her life with the conviction and joy for which she was so well-known. She will be dearly missed.
